Cuisinart CHW-12 Coffee Plus Coffee Maker Review

Design and Usability

Upon looking at the Cuisinart Coffee Plus by Cuisinart, you may be tempted into thinking it’s just another coffee maker like the rest. It’s not. The black and stainless design will complement any kitchen, no matter what decor you’ve chosen or the color of your other appliances.

Located on the top-front of the machine is the control panel with several easy-to-understand buttons and dials, and a bright blue LCD screen. One of the dials is the program dial with Auto-ON, Brew and Program. The dial on the other side is for the carafe temperature — that’s right, carafe temperature control for keeping your coffee warm if you’re not going to be able to enjoy it all right away!

Perks

Like other Cuisinart appliances, the Cuisinart CHW-12 comes with several little perks that add to the convenience and usability. As a fully-automatic coffeemaker, you have auto-on and automatic shutoff, self-cleaning function and a 1-4 cup setting if you don’t want to make a full pot.

The heater plate associated with the carafe temperature control has three settings: High, medium and low. If you’ve ever had a cup of coffee that was too hot or too cold, you’ll enjoy these various settings that ensure your cup will be the ideal temperature for you.

The Brew Pause feature allows you to enjoy a cup of coffee before the machine has finished the brew cycle. If you’re brewing a full pot, this is extremely convenient because you don’t have to wait for it.

Hot Water System

One of the best, most unique features of the Cuisinart Coffee Plus machine is the integrated hot water system. Hot water on demand is ideal for your favorite teas, cocoas and even soups. This system is independent of the coffeemaker and can be used separately or at the same time.

The system has its own dedicated 54-oz water reservoir that holds more than enough water for several uses. Indicator lights on the machine let you know several factors regarding your hot water system including letting you know when the water’s hot, ready to dispense and even when it’s ready to be refilled.

The hot water system includes an integrated charcoal water filter that removes any and all impurities giving you the best tasting, pure water you want for your beverages or dishes.

Cuisinart CHW-12 Coffee Plus Coffee Maker Reviews

Out of over 300 reviews on Amazon, the Cuisinart CHW-12 still scored a respectable 4.2 out of 5 stars. Well over half of the reviews were five stars. People absolutely love the convenience of this machine! The negative reviews, though rare, had a few issues though. A common issue is the hot water system it seems. Some people complain of a bad, almost-plastic-like taste from the hot water side. Others say the hot water side stopped working completely after an extremely short time.

This is a good value for money coffee maker, with a high capacity of 12-cup. It is very well thought and convenient to use. Now only you can decide if you can deal with the drawbacks.

What other users have to say about the Cuisinart CHW-12 Coffee Plus coffee maker.

“Finally, this thing makes a GREAT TASTING cup of coffee. I can’t believe I finally have a drip coffee maker that I enjoy using. Prior to this any time I wanted a good cup of coffee I would break out my French Press.”

“Pros: Everything!! In perfect working order and I was able to follow the manufacture’s instructions on hot water without any problems at all! Best cup of coffee I have had even counting my old Cuisinart!”

“Easy to set up, easy to use and cleanup. Has a setting for brewing a small pot (thank god I cant drink 12 cups every day) when needed. Programmable for having the coffee ready when you are.”

Veg Vigano Carioca Nero ReviewThe Vev Vigano Carioca Nero is a stovetop espresso and coffeemaker that is sure to please. If you’ve never had the pleasure of using such a simple device as a quality, Italian-made stove-top coffeemaker, you’re in for a treat. There is virtually no way you can mess up your espresso, and there’s no mess. These are definitely two things you can’t say about the more modern espresso makers on the market that have fancy knobs, multiple buttons and settings, and spigots or nozzles that seem to have minds of their own. I’ve reviewed the Carioca Nero Stovetop Espresso maker and all this small, simple device offers.

Price: $29.95 – $68.99

Simplicity and Design

There’s something to be said about simple machines whose designs have stood the test of time and are as popular now — in the age of technology — as they were when they were first introduced. This is certainly the case when discussing the Vev Vigano Carioca Nero.

Almost all of the device is made of a quality 18/10 stainless steel, including the filter plate and funnel located on the inside of the machine. The safety pressure valve, however, is made of brass. The outside is polished with a mirror-like finish that is sure to make a statement on your stove-top. The stainless steel is a step up from similar machines that use aluminum; aluminum oxidizes and can sometimes leave a metallic taste in the coffee.

Stovetop espresso makers work by heating up the water in a bottom chamber, pushing it through the coffee in the filter and up into the top chamber for a simple-yet-perfect cup of espresso.

Once the espresso is ready in the top chamber, you can easily pour it from virtually any angle thanks to the flared-lip carafe. Hold onto the machine’s uniquely shaped, black plastic handle for easy pouring.

Cleaning is a breeze. Simply unscrew the parts and hand-wash.

Features and Data

  • Stainless steel construction is both functional, stylish and durable
  • Brass safety pressure-release valve allows you to release pressure if too much builds up
  • Unique handle adds to the stylish design
  • Measures only 4- by 4- by 5-inches — small enough for a camping trip or holiday
  • Weighs only 1 lb

The product is not extremely popular and there are actually not so many people talking about it out there. Even Amazon didn’t offer too many reviews, but the Vev Vigano Carioca Nero 1-Cup received a perfect 5 out of 5 stars on their site. There was nothing negative about the device, its simplicity speaks for itself and is a huge plus for the machine’s users. The Carioca Nero 6-Cup version also got a great score however the 3-cup and 9-cup stovetop of this line don’t seem to have a lot of fans, quite the contrary.

Based only on customers reviews we should only recommend the Vev Vivano Stovetop Carioca Nero 1-cup and 6-cup stovetop pots. But we know other capacity Vev Vigano stovetop pots are built the same way, so we have to consider the reviews of all models.

Still, our aim is to let you know about the best solutions, and the best of all stovetop espresso makers is the Bialetti Moka Express which is cheaper and comes in multiple capacity options too.

If you were after a different design from Bialetti bestseller then the Vev Vigano Nero Carioca may be a good choice. Prepare to pay a little higher though.

“I love this gadget for it’s mechanical perfection and all stainless construction.”

“Incredibly simple to use and seems like it will outlast me. Buy it!”

Bialetti Moka Express ReviewBialetti began in Italy where the kitchen is the heart of the home and food is a passion. In Italy, you can find a Bialetti device in 90 percent of all homes. If that doesn’t speak for the Moka Express, know this: the Moka Express has been copied but never duplicated more than any other stovetop coffee maker and over 200 million units have been manufactured. The Bialetti Moka Express has been the go-to stove-top coffeemaker since 1933, and little has changed in its appearance and design. We’ve taken the time to review this small, inexpensive, simple, powerful machine to guide you in your decision-making.

Price: $19.95 – $55
Our Rating: Bialetti Moka Express Rating (Deserves a 5-star for the price/quality/design/use ;) )

This is something completely different from other drip coffee makers and espresso machines. It acutally doesn’t make real espresso, because the process doesn’t involve pressure. But it makes an awesome cup of coffee with great espresso taste and for the price, all coffee lovers should own one.

Here are the various models: of the Moka Express:

Bialetti Moka Espress Espresso Maker

Simplicity

No fancy buttons, knobs, dials or LED displays distract from the simple elegance of the Bialetti Moka Express. The coffeemaker is composed of three parts: bottom chamber, funnel filter and top chamber. Consisting of only three parts already makes this machine simpler to use than any other machine out there.

Simply fill the bottom chamber up to the line with cold water, then position the funnel filter over it. Fill the funnel with your espresso-ground coffee and attach the top filter. When it’s placed on the stove top, the water heats up and pressure pulls the water from the bottom chamber through the coffee grounds and into the top chamber. Voila, your three perfect cups of espresso is ready to go as soon as you hear the pressured water rising to the top chamber. The Bialetti Moka Express also has a built-in pressure-release valve for safety; you should always stand by your coffeemaker in case the pressure gets to high and you need to flip the switch.

Time-Tested Style

This design has been around since the 1930s and became popular in the 1950s. It’s small, compact and works, one of the reasons it has stood the test of time. The one visible thing that’s changed is the handle, it looks slightly different from the original models.

The Bialetti Moka Express has an unusual octagon design that sets it apart from other machines. The brushed aluminum adds a bit of style while serving a function: it heats up rapidly so your coffee is ready pretty quickly.

The Bialetti Moka Express 3-Cup coffeemaker is extremely small and its unique, stylish design and ease-of-use may make you want to keep it on your stove top at all times. It is the classic coffeepot and the only one to bear the “Little fellow with the moustache.”

Features and Technical Specs

  • Low price makes it affordable for every budget
  • Rapid heating makes three 2oz cups of coffee in less than 5 minutes
  • Durable polished aluminum allows for a stylish look and rapid heating
  • Flip-up top and side-pour spout add to the simple convenience
  • Easy three-part design is easy to clean and use
  • Made in Italy
  • Small size makes it portable for trips and camping expeditions
  • Measures only 4 ¼ by 6 ½ inches
  • Weighs only 1lb (3-cup)

Bialetti Moka Express Espresso Maker Reviews

The Bialetti Moka Express scores a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon; 72 percent of reviewers gave the device a 5-star review. An almost unanimous comment throughout the 1-star reviews about the Moka Express refer to the aluminum pot. Many people found their coffee to be metallic-tasting or that the aluminum corrodes. Rave reviews, however, dispel this myth and talked about everything from the price, the convenience and the coffee.

It is assumed that the smaller stovetop coffee makers make a better coffee, but the Bialetti Moka Express exists in 1-cup, 3-cup, 6-cup, 9-cup and 12-cup versions for the convenience and needs of every one. The price is still very affordable for all models.

What Others Are Saying About The Bialetti Moka Express

“Moka pots make great ‘espresso,’ plus they’re cheap and quick. From what I’ve gathered, Bialetti’s the best maker. So I definitely recommend this.”

“This should last ages if properly cared for.”

“ [...] my only lament about buying this espresso pot is the tears shed over all those mornings I *could* have had REAL coffee…”

“[...] it’s certainly closer to espresso than what most people would call coffee.”

“I really, really love the coffee it makes. While its not quite a true espresso, it’s not far off either – I even get a wee bit of crema.”
